I don't think it is SOP to pre-order a supplier's entire capacity for a set period.
It depends on what is being ordered. If it's a part that has to meet a certain
spec or a board that was "designed around that part" than yes, you'd want to
stockpile those parts. End of Life/Price changes & tarrifs are other issues
we have to plan for when doing manufacturing. Caps and resistors are not what
is stockpiled, but certain processors, and in our case, amplifiers are definetly
what we buy large quantities of and stick them up on a shelf until we need them.
Our board house will also buy/stock large quantities of common parts. I've
worked for an OEM for about 19 years now and currently handle a lot of the
ordering & inventory along with several other duties.
