I've been scattered recently - my mother, after recovering from a broken
hip and elbow after a fall in december, wasn't able to live
independently. She'd had some cognitive issues, and it was determined
that she'd need to go into a memory care facility. We got her in
mid-december, and were getting her comfortable there. She was a fall
risk, so stayed in a wheelchair most of the time unless supervised.

She had a quick decline from Sunday, when we had a nice visit, to being
in hospice care on Tuesday. She was in and out of consciousness, with
her family taking turns keeping her company. She passed away on Friday
    morning.

    Call your mom.

Ouch. My condolences. No matter when that sort of thing happens, no matter what came before, it still sucks.

Here's to hoping you get through it fairly well, and are well able to honor her memory.

It also hits a bit harder today, as today is my dad's birthday. He died back in 2020, though the cancer was such that, well, maybe it would have been okay for him to die a bit sooner. But we were glad for what we got, and the additional things that could be done beforehand.

    Call your mom.

And, weirdly, no call with my mom this week, as she's off doing a Palm Sunday choral event. Which hopefully goes well. But I've been thankful for the weekly family calls and minigolfing (Walkabout Minigolf in VR), even if it'd likely be a while before I wind up visiting her again.

But, in the meantime, it's looking good for me to be able to see her as she travels out of the US for the first time, and we hopefully see some things in Norway that have some connection to ancestors.

Regardless, again, my condolences, and I hope you and everyone close to her are able to celebrate and remember the whole person, good and bad, for her impact in your lives.

One of my projects this week is going to be to scan the hundreds of
photos she kept, it'll be tough, since only she knew some of the people
in the oldest photos from the 1890s.

That'll be a nice way to celebrate.

That does sound like a lovely way to both honor and preserve memories.

I've been happy for having scanned a variety of family photos from long ago, though meta data is oftentimes harder to come by. And, yeah, a lot of the oldest photos just don't have people around to be able to tell us anything more about them.

Regardless, good luck, through all of it. I'm sure it'll be a challenge, but I hope you'll get a lot out of it, too.

When my dad passed, we had a similar experience where the week before was a good visit to the hospital but things turned south quickly and he was gone within a week.

Please remember to take care of yourself during these times as well if possible. (both mentally and physically) I know I didn't really do that when my dad passed and no good came of that.

My family is in NYC for my daughter's spring break. I'd planned on staying home because of work responsibilities. Took today off, went for a drive, listened to some new music, had a great lunch, got home, finished "North of North", and did some laundry. Going back to work tomorrow, feel like today's helping me shift gears, so to speak.
