• Decent SNES - DS Era JRPGS?

From Foriest Jan Smith@21:2/156 to All on Sat Nov 8 19:13:16 2025
I am currently interested in getting into older RPGs; at the moment I've just started on "Chrono Trigger" for SNES. So far I'm enjoying it, and after that I plan to try "Earthbound" or the "Lunar" series. Any suggestions?

Anything Mana Series. Zelda? FF, Breath of Fire, Dragon Quests?

All above are classic equal to what you've described above.

A very non standard hard to say if more adventure than jrpg also worth checking: Clock Tower

and... Megami Tensei. First games are hacked to enable English translation. very pleasant to play! Interesting mechanics that were the precursor of Persona series.

If you like Chrono Trigger, give Secret of Mana a try. I've been meaning to try the HD Remaster of the game, but the reviews of that are... mixed.

here's a list of games i've worked through recently. some of them are platformers but i played them because they're from "Quintet" and are directly related in various ways to the other games listed. various systems:

Actraiser (platformer + simulation. not really flexible like Sim* games)
    Soul Blazer (action RPG)
Actraiser 2 (100% platformer .. difficult for no reason)
    Illusion of Gaia (action RPG)
Robotrek (RPG. predates Pokemon but has some serious Pokemon vibes)
Shining in the Darkness (dungeon crawler. printing or making maps required) Neutopia (NES Zelda knockoff. artificially difficult because of bad design) Deja Vu (this is a "point and click" basically, adapted to NES)

currently playing "Terranigma" which is a spiritual sequel to Illusion of Gaia, Soul Blazer, etc

after that i'm leaning toward "Crusader of Centy" (Genesis).. mainly since i never heard of it back in the day so it'll be entirely new.

another fun one (for Game Gear) was "Defenders of Oasis" .. that's one i entirely missed back in the day too.

i made a huge list on my little Anbernic portable so if you need some more i can load that up and dig around

Have you ever happened to ever heard of one called "Solar Pier"? That's a title that's come up--although that's for Dreamcast, if I recall. It has multiple PC ports, from my recollection, however.

Can't help, but older RPGs caught my eye... :-) My first was Top Secret.

Of course I'm talking pencil and paper, not video. :-)

On that front, I'd like to try Space 1899, but I haven't been able to find someone to try tabletop with since 2020 or so. Was my first time and a friend DM'd to hopefully teach me and another guy the ropes of tabletop... Other guy left without much notice and DM refused to continue campaign without him :(

Hate to hear that... :( Bulk of mine is over Google Meet with my
high school buddies. We TRY to get together twice a month, but doesn't
    always happen...

I'm not familiar with that one though! I'll have to look it up!
