Duuuuuude. I configured a bunch of it the other day. Added my email accounts, etc. I'm kind of impressed. Why hasn't anyone else thought of having your email accounts listed on the left side in it's own pane WHILE you browse the web!? That's kind of genius.

Before anyone tells me that a thousand other browsers already do this, I've used Firefox for as long as I can remember, which doesn't have that feature. So it was nice to see for the first time.

I've had mutt and neomutt setup at different times. While I enjoy them, they would be better off staying on my non-gui VMs. But then, makes it kind of pointless when I access those gui-less VMs with a full fledged desktop that I install any other email client on.

It may be easier (and probably is), but in my opinion, the interfaces of every webmail I've been to are ugly in comparison. I'm sure you can change how it all looks and feels, but I haven't even tried to use them to that extent.

I'm digging Vivaldi, though. Killing two birds with one stone, here. Email accounts listed on the left side of the browser is pretty flippin' awesome.

i always downloaded my mail locally via Thunderbird (archive starts in 2008). Cause i like to archive those emails for long time periods, just in case i have to come back to an old email for some reason. Also alot of business related emails that i wanted to archive.
i have a little hybrid solution to have access to the latest emails on my phone. I just have an freemail account on the email app on the phone and my main email account has a rule to forward everything to this email account on my phone. So i always have the latest emails and attachments with me, but got the emails archived on my home computer also and can delete the emails from my phone whenever i think it is not relevant to have them available there any longer.
It's maybe not for everyone, but it works quite good for me =)

Word to that. It's pretty much all I use. When I absolutely must access an email from something like a phone or other device that it's hard to use a proper terminal on, I have RoundCube webmail installed and I can bounce the message off to that.

I never used Gmail. i don't trust it and i don't think i could store that many emails incl. attachments in the free tier (15GB that you also share with documents and photos).

if you don't care about privacy so much google really seems to have to best offers/tarifs if you need alot of storage for your emails.

If i would consider paying for email i would maybe choose proton over google. But i have to admit the value for money is best with google. You just have to trust them with your data.

To tell the truth, i have to think about it if i want to change the way i receive and store my emails. For now it works and has worked for some time.
You know how they say, never change a running system ;)

PS: What a pitty that skiff.com was bought by Notion. It was a really good service with lots of features, domains and aliases for a competitive price. And it was encrypted to its core. The whole Skiff service was build with complete encryption in mind. They could not resist the buy offer. Too bad. I was using their free tier for as long as it was available.

I never used Gmail. i don't trust it and i don't think i could store that many emails incl. attachments in the free tier (15GB that you also share with documents and photos).

I've always used Google's free tier and never paid for storage from Google, and generally I've never had a problem with running out of storage. I generally don't like to keep photos & things in Google cloud storage. I can keep my own backups on my computer & on an external drive. Sometimes Google has automatically enabled Google Drive backups of my phone photos and then sent me notifications that my Google Drive cloud storage is getting low, and then I'd go remove the photo backups from my Google Drive and disable the Google Drive photo auto-backup. I've also seen archived emails in my Gmail from years ago with photo attachments, and I've deleted the largest of those, as I don't think I really need to archive those old emails that I've sent.

I hadn't thought about the privacy issues a whole lot until recently. I've thought about finding another email service provider, though I do like the Gmail interface (and its use of labeling emails), and I'm not sure yet if another email service provides that type of functionality.

I've been using Gmail since 2004 though, and I can't say I've been adversely affected by anything that was due to a privacy issue with Gmail.

i have all my webmail just route to one address.
i use claws to keep all that shit active. i still think claws is a pos
atleast on windows. right now it freezed up for 5 mins on a queue directory with 3 msgs in it.

when i was a kid i made an account with all those webmail sites, not sure
why. probably because in those days you could lose your email addy easy because those sites would be bought out.

i did it before but then tried it again years later. i am dragging the email icon onto the left panel and it wont take.
i cant open up email acct configuration.

yes. I only use mutt if I ssh to sdf when at work. (They don't block
ssh yet)

I got tired of things not matching perfectly (years ago) and switched to webmail. Now with imap and everything working correctly I sometimes use
my email client (emclient) but mostly stick with the web.

i think they are going to disable the ability to access them via imap.
they tried that before but it came back. the are also taking away

I just tried this. Hitting it once made the email pane disappear, and hitting it a second time made it reappear. So, not sure what's going on on your end. The settings button on the bottom left or ctrl-f12 may give you some further help.

Under the "Mail" tab, I have:

Sync options: All messages
Show mail bar: Yes (checked)

Under Mail Panel, everything on the left is checked. On the right, I've removed things in "Mail panel order and visibility" that I don't need, just leaving "All accounts", "Flags", and "Labels".

Seems to work fine here. I didn't do much messing around with it except change some settings and add my accounts.

How many of those were available when you were a kid? I think the first webmail site I remember was Hotmail, from around 1999 or so. I wasn't a kid anymore at that time, and I thought you were older than me..

I use Vivaldi, and I don't recall needing to make a Vivaldi account. Maybe if you want to use Vivaldi's sync feature (for settings & bookmarks).

it could be i got a funny version. i installed it using chocolately.

i just tried the manual install and it had the install location as being in
an appdata /core dir.

i changed to another directory destination and now
having the same issue with no being able to pin the email icon to the pane
and not using the hotkey. pretty weird. also i see the installer did not use the directory i provided.

so what i did was search for all the files and delete them and then ran the install again and during the install it asked for the mail,etc.

So you got it to work, or no?

I've since realized that left pane is for just about everything. When I open Vivaldi it shows the mail pane, but I can hit the 'feeds' button, or 'calendar' button, or any of the other web panel buttons (including adding a new one, if I wanted), and that will change that left pane to show any of those, instead.

Definitely a nice feature that I haven't encountered in any other browsers, that's for sure.

and attachments, and tied some of their "smart features" to doing so,
I'm thinking of hosting my own mail again, but outbound SMTP is a pain
these days.

This has all prompted me to do a mail cleanup, I have a mail archive
going back to when I started using Gmail, and I'm sure I have a ton of
mail saved I don't need anymore.

I was using the email client also as a way to archive all email attachments and if i needed an invoice for an old order, i could always find it in the email client.
To store those kind of email attachments, i now started using paperless-ngx. So when i got an order email with an invoice attached, i save a copy of the invoice to paperless-ngx and have a better seperate and searchable archive there. And the Email client does not have to handle all those attachments wich are also the reason my Email storage became so huge over the years.

I think the sync feature does make it convenient. I especially like having my bookmarks available on multiple PCs. I used to use a bookmark sync add-on years ago, I think when I was using Firefox.
