I was 14 years old when I saw the original; I was a "serious" long-haired musician, so I didn't think it was funny... at all. Older friends kept referring to it and re-watching it and over time, I started to "get it" and now it's one of my all time favorite movies. So I think you have to either:

    1) think musicians take themselves too seriously and so think it's funny to see them taken down a notch like that (even if only fictionally), or:

    2) be a musican that does not take themselves too seriously and basically laugh at the absurdity of your past-time/profession

I finally watched Spinal Tap around 2005 or something, and I thought it was pretty funny. I only ever played music for fun though, never really as a serious musician.

When I visited the UK in 2013, Stonehenge was one of the places I visited, and I remembered the Stonehenge bit in Spinal Tap.. Funny stuff.

I watched it with my dad on cable, I had to explain about 15 minutes
out that it was a mockumentary. :)
